"Obituary

We regret to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Lambie, senr., Lakeside, who dropped dead at her residence at about 6 a.m. yesterday.

The deceased lady was in her 86th year, and was one of the most respected of all our early pioneers. It appears that the old lady, who naturally, considering her age, was getting very feeble, retired to rest at the usual hour on Thursday evening, but took a bad turn yesterday morning. Her granddaughter (who stayed with the aged lady and her husband) ran across the road to call in the assistance of her mother, but before they had time to get back, the old lady had expired. The deceased lady was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and with her husband arrived in New Zealand over forty years ago, and has been living at Lakeside ever since. Old Mr and Mrs Lambie, as they are familiarly known, were without doubt, recognised as the Darby and Joan of the Ellesmere district, and the loss of Mrs Lambie will be much felt throughout the district, not only from the ordinary sense of loss by by death, but as the removal of one of the models and monuments of the district. The deceased lady leaves a family of grown-up children. The funeral is advertised for Monday, and should probably be the biggest ever known in the district.

The deceased lady arrived in Lakeside in 1865, having sailed from Greenock, Glasgow, by the Peter Denny, and has lived at Lakeside ever since. She leaves four sons—viz, Robert and William living in North Island, and John, Kyle and James, Lakeside. Failure of the heart's action was the cause of death, but death came very peacefully." 4
