"PORT BROUGHTON PIONEER

I HAD a pleasant talk with Mr. R. D. Goodridge, -who has been at Port Broughton for 62 years, ever since he was 18. He came up to celebrate his 80th birthday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bert Claridge, at Clifton street, Malvern, and there met, among i many old friends, his four sisters— Mesdames Selina Edwards (Edwardstown) , Lizzie Wall (Enfield). Jessie Edwards (Waikerie), and Annie Burniston (Wayville West).

My father, James Goodridge,' he told me, 'was in the first carpentry business in Riverton, where I was bom. He was at Booleroo Centre when he took up land at Ward's Hill, near Port Broughton, where there was nothing in the town but the pub on one side, kept by David Gray, father of Frank.

'I remember when I went back to Booleroo from a sea of scrub and sandhills the first time, and they asked. 'What's it like there, Bob?' I said, 'If I live to be a hundred I'll be cutting wood.' Today wood is £2 a ton in the town. We were so busy working and batching that I didn't even know who my neighbor was. Water was our trouble. On one trip I went 18 miles to Merriton for 800 gallons, which didn't last long, and the horses didn't like it.

'It was from the Broughton River. Then we got the Beetaloo water within eight miles of us. Sometimes it would be brought on trucks from Mundoora and four or five of us would wait all day, and couldn't get it because the man in charge wouldn't turn it on until the boss came.' Mr. Goodridge is popularly known at Port Broughton as the institute librarian and the bowls greenkeeper. He has been president of the juvenile Oddfellows' Lodge for 27 years. Another daughter is Mrs. C. R. Harris, of Gurr's road. Beulah Park." 6
