John LINGARD of Alford

  • Born: Est 1635
  • Married (1): 20 Jan 1659, Alford, Lincolnshire, England
  • Married (2): 17 Oct 1665, Bilsby Holy Trinity, Lincolnshire, England 1
  • Buried: 31 Oct 1707, Alford, Lincolnshire, England 2

  General Notes:

Compiler's 8 x great-grandfather

  Research Notes:

A John Lingard was christened in Yarburgh (north of Alford) on 6 Feb 1633, son of William Lingard and Margret. However, he was probably John Lingard, labourer, who was buried in Yarburgh 18 Mar 1652/3. Familysearch.org shows another John Lingard christened in Yarburgh 29 Mar 1644, son of John Lingard; however, on examination this is an inexplicable mistranscription of John son of John Longbottom and Rebecca his wife.

  Marriage Information:

John married Thomasine BANCROFT, daughter of Matthias BANCROFT and Joanna CANDLESBIK, on 20 Jan 1659 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. (Thomasine BANCROFT was born est 1640 and died by 1665.)

  Marriage Information:

John also married Mary (Maria) WARD on 17 Oct 1665 in Bilsby Holy Trinity, Lincolnshire, England 1. (Mary (Maria) WARD was born est 1640 and was buried on 25 Apr 1696 in Alford, Lincolnshire, England 2.

  Marriage Notes:

Neither John Lingard nor Mary Ward were from Bilsby, as the Marriage Bond indicates (both from "elsewhere"). John, Mary and their family lived in Alford, though neither John nor Mary were christened there. The date of christening of John's eldest son by his first wife Thomasine Bancroft in 1659 was the first Lingard christening in Alford in nearly 60 years. However, note from the Alford parish register: Elizabetha Lingarde, vidua [widow], sepult. 10 Jan 1617/8, who may have been John's mother.
