"DEATH UNDER PECULIAR CIRCUMSTANCES.

A sudden death under peculiar circumstances was inquired into before the Coroner (Mr. J. Ashcroft) and a jury at Petone on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday William H. Northe, a carpenter residing in Elizabeth Street, on arriving home about 12.15, found his wife, Lizzie Carmichael Northe, a somewhat elderly woman, lying in bed. She did not speak, but he knew she was alive, as, when thinking she had resumed intemperate habits, to which she was addicted some time ago, he smacked her face—not hard—with his open hand, and she blinked her eyes. He placed her head in a more comfortable position and left her. Less than two hours later when he went into the room again, she was lying face downward, with bloody froth on her lips, and her face swollen. Life was extinct. A son who had reached the house about 2 o'clock, also saw her and went for a doctor. Dr. Perry could find no trace of alcohol in the stomach, and there was not sufficient disease of the heart to cause death. Other indications made it clear to the doctor's mind that death was due to asphyxia, but what caused the suffocation there was nothing whatever to show. There were no marks of violence except two or three very slight scratches on the face. When the husband found his wife dead he removed from her neck a small scarf that seemed very tight, but this scarf had left no marks. The deceased had given way to intemperance some time ago after the death of a son in South Africa, who left his life insurance policy for £500 in her favour. It was not known whether she had made a will regarding this money. For some months she had not been intemperate, but three times last week her husband noticed she had beer drinking slightly. There were no empty bottle or any intoxicating liquor in the house, and he did not know where she got drink. She had never been subject to fits The Coroner said, after the above facts had been elicited yesterday, that the position was extremely unsatisfactory, and were it not that Mr. Northe seemed to be a man above suspicion, the case might be open to serious suggestions. The jury found that death was due to asphyxia, but how it was caused there was no evidence to show." 4
