Born in Sydney, eldest son of Edward; but lived with his grandmother, Mrs John Thomas Hely, in Wagga Wagga. Educated at Wagga Wagga. Enlisted on the first day of a call to arms in 1914 during World War I; sent to New Guinea and returned a captain but discharged because of illness; enlisted again on December 31, 1916; served in Egypt and France; lance corporal, 17th Battalion; killed in action in France on August 31, 1918 at the age of thirty-two; listed on the Honour Roll of the Christian Brothers High School, Wagga Wagga (AWM Nominal Roll; DA Sept 21, 1918; May 5, 1919; and Dec 16, 1920). 2
