Enlisted on July 19, 1915 during World War I; arrived in Egypt in 1915 as a private in 28th battery; 3rd Battalion, First Infantry Brigade; transferred to the 10th Artillery Brigade, commanded by his brother, Charles; fought together in France from Ypres to the Somme till Charles invalided home; later promoted to bombardier in 38th battery, later corporal, then sergeant and finally lieutenant, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, in 1917; returned to Australia on April 5, 1919; listed on the Memorial Arch, Wagga Wagga (AWM Nominal Roll; DA Mar 11, 15 & 22, 1916; Aug 8, 1917; Nov 2, 1918; and May 29, 1919). Grocery Manager for W.G. Huthwaite and Co, Wagga Wagga, in the early 1920s (DA Apr 2, 1981). Lived at Cowra in 1942. 4
