At the time of the 1841 England Census Henry Gates, aged about 30, and wife Elizabeth Gates, aged about 30, were living in Edward St., Brighthelmstone St. Peter, Sussex. With them was daughter Marian* (aged about 1).
* In all other records she is shown as Miriam.
At the time of the 1851 England Census Henry Gates, age 43, born in Buxted Sussex, egg merchant, and [second] wife Jane, age 34, born in Brighton Sussex, were living at 25 North Lane, Brighton St. Peter. With them were children (born in Brighton): Miriam (11), scholar, Henry (7), scholar, Walter (6), scholar, George (4), scholar, and Albert (1).
