An Elinor Akhurst was christened on 20 May 1720 in Laughton Sussex, daughter of John Akhurst* and Ann Eason** (married 3 Oct 1714 in Laughton). Laughton is not far from Lewes in the general direction of Ticehurst. However, she would have been 12 years older than Henry, which seems unlikely, though not impossible.
John and Ann had 4 daughters (all christened in Laughton):
Sarah: 9 Jun 1722
A Sarah Akehurst married Richard Begnall in Lewes 1 Feb 1742.
Dorothy: 26 Feb 1717
Ann: 22 Mar 1715
An Ann Akehurst married James Gear in Arlington (general region of Laughton/Lewes) 29 Jan 1737 and had children (christened in Arlington):
James (6 Jan 1739), James (10 Apr 1743), William (30 Mar 1746), Edward (9 Apr 1749), Ann (12 Apr 1752), Thomas (21 Jul 1755), Mary (30 Dec 1756), George (28 May 1858)
Eleanor married Henry NEWICK, son of Robert NEWARK and Martha BATTUM, on 22 Feb 1752 in Kingston by Lewes Sussex, England 1. (Henry NEWICK was christened on 26 Nov 1732 in Ticehurst, Sussex, England 2 and was buried on 19 Sep 1798 in St. Mary, Ticehurst, Sussex, England 3.)
The parish register shows the marriage of Henry NEWICK and Eleanor AKEHURST, and lists the children of Henry and Eleanor under the surname NEWARK which can be considered an orthographic variation.
