MOTOR CYCLIST CENSURED

"We return a verdict of accidental death, but ask the driver of the motor-cycle to be censured for not driving with sufficient caution," was the jury's verdict at the adjourned inquest, at the West Kent Hospital, Maidstone, on Monday, relative to the death of Cecil Perriman (20) of Old Tovil Road, Maidstone, who was killed at the Chiltern Hundreds' cross-roads on September 8th. The motor-cycle was ridden by Kenneth Ewart Sampson (20) of 2, Melville Road, Maidstone, in Perriman riding pillion, and came into collision with a motor-car driven by Miss Kathleen Moody, of Northfleet. After the impact, the car ran into the rear of a stationary charabanc, injuring Mrs. Clara Balcombe. Sampson was also injured, as was also Miss Moody, Mrs. E. Austin, her sister, and Mrs. Moody, her mother. According to the evidence the motor-car was proceeding from Bearsted and was signalled by an A.A. patrol, who was on point duty, to proceed. At the same time the patrol signalled to the motor-cycle, which was proceeding from Maidstone, to stop. This the cyclist failed to do, and, keeping straight on, crashed into the car. Witnesses bearing out this version were Alfred T. Skinner, of The Firs, Woodcut Hill, Hollingbourne—who was following Miss Moody's car—Albert V. Taylor, of Stockbury—who was standing outside the Chiltern Hundreds—Alexander Campbell, the A.A. patrol, Charles Moody, Miss Kathleen Moody and Mrs. E. Austin. All agreed that the patrol's signal was clear and Mr. Skinner said that the patrol made frantic efforts to stop the motor-cycle,—Police Sergeant W. W. Groombridge (Bearsted) said that on the day following the accident Sampson stated that the A.A. Scout signalled him on, and as he did so the car came across his front. Sampson told him that his Licences were in order, but he had since found out that they were not.
