"Lived at Reawla Lane, Gwinear until c.1875 when the subject of Mexico and its miners made a great impression on him. It was common knowledge that the mineral produce of Mexico was remarkable.... About this time, Edward's mining company was seeking a competent person to place in Mexico as their representative, someone especially conversant with metallurgical knowledge who could conduct the company's affairs and engage local labourers. Even the machinery for Mexican Mines was being sent from Cornwall. Edward Skewes was chosen to go." 4
