At the time of 1851 England Census James Avis, age 22, born in Ashurst Kent, unmarried, ag serv, was in Bolebrook, Hartfield Sussex.

At the time of the 1861 England Census James Avis, age 32, born in Speldhurst Kent, ag lab, and wife Sarah, age 26, born in Cowden Kent, were living in Frant Sussex. With them was son William (7 mo) of Frant.

At the time of the 1871 England Census James Avis, age 40, born in Ashurst Kent, gamekeeper, and wife Sarah, age 35, born in Cowden Kent, were living in Glebe Cottage, Frant Sussex. Present were sons William (10) of Cowden Kent, scholar, and Richard (6) of Wadhurst Sussex.

At the time of the 1881 England Census James Avis, age 51, born in Ashurst Kent, ag lab, and wife Sarah Ann, age 45, born in Cowden Kent, laundress, were living in Gottice Hill House, Cowden Kent. With them were sons William J (20) of Cowden Kent, and Richard (16) of Wadhurst Sussex.

At the time of the 1891 England Census James Avis, age 62, born in Ashurst Kent, agricultural laborer, and wife Sarah, age 55, born in Cowden Kent, were living in Owls Croft, Hartfield Sussex. Present were sons William (30) of Cowden, hoop maker, and Richard (26) of Wadhurst Sussex, agricultural laborer.

At the time of the 1901 England Census James Avis, age 72, born in Ashurst Kent, unable to work, an wife Sarah Ann, age 65, born in Cowden Kent, were living in Owls Croft, Hartfield Sussex. With them were sons (both single): William (41) of Cowden, agricultural labourer, and Richard (35) of Wadhurst, agricultural labourer.
