At the time of the 1871 England Census Henry Avis, age 11, born in Tonbridge Kent, ag lab, was with his parents in Thatch Village, Pembury Kent.

At the time of the 1891 England Census Henry Avis, age 31, born in Tonbridge Kent, policeman, and wife Alice, age 29, born in Seal Kent, were living in Vine Cottage, Sevenoaks Kent. With them were sons (born in Sevenoaks): Henry J (3) and Herbert (1), and relative Rosetta Avis* (12?) of Speldhurst Kent.

* The second digit of Rosetta's age is partly obscured; however, she is probably Henry's niece—daughter of Henry's brother James Peter Avis.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Henry Avis, age 40, born in Tonbridge Kent, brewer's drayman, and wife Alice M, age 38, born in Seal Kent, were living at 3 Bow Terrace, Wateringbury Kent. Present were children (born in Sevenoaks): John (13), Herbert (11) and Edith E (6).

At the time of the 1911 England Census Henry Avis, age 51, born in Tonbridge Kent, farm labourer, and wife of 24 years Alice Mary, age 49, born in Seal Kent (mother of 4 children), were living at 2 Police Station Rd., West Malling Kent. Children listed are Henry John Avis (23) of Sevenoaks, ironmonger's assistant, Herbert Avis (21) of Sevenoaks, soldier (entry crossed out), Edith Ellen (16), domestic servant (entry crossed out), and George Edward (7) of West Malling, school boy.
