At the time of the 1881 England Census William J Gard, age 49, born in Dartmouth Devon, leading man of painters, and wife Jane Gard, age 54, born in Lower Rainham Kent, were living at 23 Stafford St., St. Mary Magdalene, New Brompton Kent. With them was son Reuben J (21) of New Brompton, painter in dockyard.
