At the time of the 1841 England Census Sarah Costen, aged about 40, and husband James Costen, aged about 40, labourer, were living in Rainham Mark, Rainham Kent. With them were children: Esther* (15), Jane* (15), Sarah (6), Hannah (4), Emma (3) and Geo: (1).
* Esther and Jane would have been daughters of a previous marriage of James.
At the time of the 1851 England Census Sarah Costen, age 52, born in Newnham Kent, and husband James Costen, age 50, born in Rainham Kent, ag lab, were living in Alfred Place, Gillingham Kent. With them were children: Hannah (14) of Rainham, Emma (12) of Gravesend, and George (11) of Gravesend.
At the time of the 1861 England Census Sarah Costen, age 63, born in Newnham Kent, and husband James Costen, age 63, born in Rainham Kent,brick maker, were living in Alfred Place, Gillingham Kent. With them was son George (21) of Gravesend, brick maker.
At the time of the 1871 England Census Sarah Costen, age 73, born in Newnham Kent, widow, was with her daughter Hannah F Frost and her family in Mill Cottage, Wateringbury Kent.
