At the time of the 1891 Sophia Carey, age 50, born in B'ham Warwickshire, widow, charwoman, was living 12 B9 Gt Hampton Rd., Birmingham Warwickshire. With her were children (born in B'ham): Elizabeth Carey* (19), pressworker, Sophia Carey* (14), scholar, Harry Carey* (11), scholar, and Ernest Carey* (9), scholar. Boarding was Charles Docker (39) of B'ham, single, brass dresser.
* Elizabeth Carey was the youngest daughter of Sophia and her husband Edward Carey. Edward died when Elizabeth was about 2 years old. Daughter Sophia, born in 1877, is listed in the GROE birth index (Birmingham district) as Sophia Lea Carey, mother's maiden-name not provided. As Sophia Lea, she married in 1898 in Birmingham to Frederick Butler, stating that her father was William Lea, jeweller, deceased. Harry and Ernest were born almost a decade after the death of Sophia's husband, Edward Carey. While I've been unable to identify Harry Carey / Lea, Ernest Lea appears in the GROE birth index for the year 1882, born in Birmingham, his mother's maiden-name recorded as INSLEY. Sophia and Ernest were ostensibly the daughter and son respectively of Sophia by William Lea, whose family name Sophia appears to have adopted.
At the time of the 1901 England Census Sophia Lea, age 62, born in B'ham, widow, was living at 8/4 Summer HIll St., Birmingham Warwickshire. With her were children (born in B'ham): Harry Lea (23), jeweller's . . . . . . . , Ernest Lea (21), jeweller's . . . . . . Boarding was Charles Docker (49) of B'ham, single.
At the time of the 1911 England Census Sophia Lee, age 72, born in Birmingham, widow, retired, was with her daughter Elizabeth Kench and her family at 75 Little King Street Hockley, Birmingham Warwickshire.
