Order to the escheator beyond Trent to deliver to Ralph de Nevill, steward of the household, the lands late of Randolf de Nevill, his father, whose heir he is, with the issues thereof, Ralph having sued a writ of diem clausit extremum for inquisitions to be made and returned to Chancery on Randolf 's death, and the king having granted to him the said lands to hold so long as they remain in the king's hand, so that he answer for the issues thereof at the king's will.

SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Blibourgh, Friday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III.

Blibourgh. The manor (extent given, including a marsh of 8a., a turbary, a custom called ' travers,' a leet held on the feast of St. Thomas the Apostle, and two fairs at the Assumption and the Annunciation), held of the king in chief by service of one knight's fee.

He died on 5 August last. John de Nevill, his son, aged 38 years and more, is his heir.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 28 August, 41 Edward III.

He died on 5 August, 41 Edward III, seised of : —

Parish of St. Olave in Sylverstrete. A tenement in the corner of Mugwellestrete on the west side. It now stands empty and unlet, nor was it let at any time during Ralph's life, but always stood empty and served as the inn of himself and his servants. It is held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He held no other lands &c. in the city or suburbs.

John Nevill, knight, his son, aged 38 years, is his heir.

ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Claveryngge, Thursday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 41 Edward III.

Claveryngge. The manor (extent given), with the half-hundred of Claveryngge, held of the king in chief by service of one knight's fee. The extent includes a park, rents of 1lb. pepper, ½lb. cummin and 3 ploughshares, and a leet held on the feast of St. Peter's Chains. The half-hundred is worth 33s. 4d. yearly. The advowson of the chantry of the chapel of St. John the Evangelist, Claveryngge, belongs to the manor, but is worth nothing.

Aynho. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the hospital of St. James and St. John thereto belonging, and a view of frankpledge held once a year at the Decollation of St. John the Baptist. The extent includes a common oven, a fishery in the water of Charewell, and works of ploughing to be done by certain tenants of Croulton, to wit, to plough 9a. yearly of the demesne lands of the manor. The manor with the advowson of the hospital he held of the earl of Hereford by homage and fealty ; and the view of frankpledge of Robert de Holand, knight, rendering 6s. 8d. yearly.

He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Newcastle upon Tyne. A messuage held of the king in free burgage for 3d. yearly, rendering therefrom to the heirs of John de Denton 20s. yearly ; and a rent of £118 12s. 11½d. out of the issues of the king's customs and subsidies in the port of Newcastle by the hands of the collectors or farmers thereof.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Penreth, Tuesday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 41 Edward III.

Ralph de Nevile, knight, died seised of £51 7s. ½d. of a certain rent in the county called cornage payable at the Assumption for the whole year. He held it to him and his heirs of the king in chief by grant of the king, saving to the king the homages, wardships, reliefs and all other services of all the tenants who render the said farm called cornage.

He held no other lands &c. in the county.

NORTHUMBEELAND. Inq. taken in the castle at Newcastle upon Tyne, Thursday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 41 Edward III.

Corbrigg. A yearly rent of £40 issuing from the town and borough, granted by the king's charter to him and his heirs for ever. The said town and borough are held of the king in chief by service of rendering the yearly rent aforesaid.
Wollore. A yearly rent of £20 issuing from a moiety of the town, held for his hfe. The said moiety is held of the king in chief by knight's service.
Neuburn. The manor (extent given) with its members, held for life, by an indenture shewn at this inquisition, by grant of Henry de Percy, deceased, late lord of Alnewyk. The extent includes a fishery in the river Tyne, a coal mine, a hamlet called Botelawe, a waste plot called Deuelawe, a hamlet called Walbotle, a rent of 18d. called ' place silver,' and a free farm of 15s. 7d. issuing from the town of Throklawe. The reversion of the manor and its members after the death of Ralph de Nevill belongs to Henry de Percy the father, lord of Alnewyk, son and heir of Henry de Percy, deceased, late lord of Alnewyk. The manor of Werkworth, whereof the said manor of Neuburn is parcel, is held of the king in chief by knight's service.

The extent includes a park with deer, a close called ' Boulfuschcroftes ' held of the king in chief by service of rendering [14]s. 4d. at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff, a close called ' le Cotegarth,' and rents &c. at Westhllyng, Touthorp in les Thistels and Briddale, which are appurtenances of the manor.

Thoraldeby. The manor (extent given) with the town of Neubiggyng (extent given) and the advowson of the church of Aykesgarth, held of the earl of Richmond by knight's service. He held the manor for life, with remainder in tail male to Robert de Nevill, his son, and with reversion to himself and his heirs. He held the town with the advowson in his demesne as of fee. The extent of the manor includes a fulling-mill, a brewhouse with an oven, rents of free tenants at Burton, rents of tenants at will in Walden, rents of tenants at will at Bysschopdale, a vaccary called ' Kiddestanes,' herbage of ' le Langecotes,' ' le Nordengaill,' ' Swynwathecote ' and ' le Heynynges,' and the following fees : —

Caldconyngeston. The manor (extent given), held by the aforesaid Ralph of Roger de Clyfford, as of the castle of Skipton, by knight's service. The following fees belong to the manor : —

Crakhowe. 4 carucates of land held by the prior of Marton by knight's service, whereof 12 carucates make one knight's fee ;
1½ carucates of land held by the prior of Bolton by knight's service, as above ; and half a carucate of land held by Robert del Vikers of Marton by knight's service, as above.
Ayreton. A carucate of land held by Henry son of Hugh by knight's service, as above.
Brynsale and Thorp by Brynsall. A carucate of land held by Richard de Hepeden by knight's service ; and a carucate of land held by the heir of Brian de Normanvill by knight's service, as above.
Conyngeston. A carucate of land held by Robert de Clyderhowe by knight's service, as above ; 5 bovates of land held by John son of William by knight's service, as above ; and 2 bovates of land held by Thomas de Syngilton by knight's service, as above.
Hapiltrewyk and Wodhouse. A carucate of land held by the prior of Marton by knight's service, as above.
(Unspecified.) 3 carucates of land held by Edmund Talbot of the heir of Thomas Mauhaut, and by the said heir of Ralph aforesaid, by knight's service, as above ; 6 carucates of land held by Robert son of Hugh de Euere by knight's service, as above ; and 2 carucates of land held by the prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England by knight's service, as above.
Hertelyngton. 2 carucates of land held by William de Hertelyngton by knight's service, as above.
Faxflete. The manor, with appurtenances in Southcave, held by the said Ralph de Nevill for life by the king's grant, with remainder to John de Stryvelyn, knight, and his heirs, likewise by the king's grant. The manor is held of Sir John de Moubray by knight's service.
Kirkeby on Querf. The manor, with tenements in Grymmeston and Milford, held by the said Ralph for life by grant of Robert de Nevill, the elder, of Horneby, with remainder to Robert de Nevill of Horneby, son of Robert aforesaid, and his heirs. The manor is held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Pontefract, by knight's service.
Rand. 100s. rent from the manor, which manor Robert de Rouclyff, knight, holds for life at the said rent, with reversion to Ralph and his heirs. The manor is held of the earl of Richmond by knight's service.
Bouthom by York. A messuage, held by John de Thornton for life by grant of the said Ralph, rendering therefor 20s. yearly to Ralph and his heirs, with reversion to them. It is held of the king in burgage of the city of York.
Thorperawe by Smetheton. A cottage, held by the said Ralph of the bishop of Durham by fealty ; and 8 messuages and 8 bovates of land rendering 64s. yearly, held by the same Ralph for the life of John Haunsard of the bishop of Durham by fealty.
Horneby by Smetheton. 8 tofts and 8 bovates of land rendering 48s. yearly, held by the same Ralph for the hfe of the said John, with remainder to the latter's right heirs. The premises are held of the bishop of Durham by fealty.
Aykesgarth, Middelham and Fysshelak. The advowsons of the churches.
Welle. The advowson of the hospital, which is held of Ralph and his heirs in perpetual alms.

The said Ralph had no other lands, fees or advowsons in the county.

Date of death as above. John de Nevill, knight, his son, aged 38 years and more, is his heir.

Raskelff. The said Ralph held the reversion of the manor (extent given) after the death of Alexander de Nevill, his brother, who held it for life with the king's licence by grant of Ranulf de Nevill, his father, deceased, with reversion after his death to the said Ranulf and his heirs. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of one knight's fee. The reversion belonged to Ralph, now deceased, and his heirs, and now belongs to the aforesaid John de Nevill and his heirs as Ralph's son and heir. Alexander died on 15 March last, whereupon Ralph entered into the manor and held it at his death.
The extent includes 3 fish stews on the demesne, worth nothing because of the destruction wrought by ' les oters,' a close called ' le Westclose,' 4½a. meadow in ' les Marsdales,' 2a. meadow in ' les Bradenges,' a wood in common called ' le Raskelffwod,' and the following fees : —

Skelton. A messuage and 2 bovates of land held by John de Scotherskelf by knight's service and suit to the court of Easkelff twice a year.
Asmonderby . Tenements held by John de Acastre of York by knight's service and suit to the court of Raskelff every three weeks.
Thormotby. A messuage, 6 bovates of land and 9a. meadow held by John son of John Mynyot by knight's service ; a messuage, 8 bovates of land, 5a. meadow and 33a. of ' forland ' held by the heir of Alexander de Barkworth by knight's service ; and a toft and 2 bovates of land held by Robert Blaumfrount by knight's service. Also there are at Thormotby rents of 4s. and 1lb. cummin.

The said Alexander held no other lands or fees in the escheator's bailiwick.

Appointment of Robert de Hagerston, John de Langton of York, Walter de Swynhowe, John de Bretteby, Thomas Bernard and John Lewyn,' masoun,' to take carpenters, masons and other workmen in the counties of York and Northumberland for the repair of the defects of the castle of Baumburgh, put them to the works at the king's wages to be paid by the executors of the will of Ralph de Nevill, late keeper and constable of the said castle, buy timber, stone and other necessaries for the said works, and carriage for the same, to be paid for bythe said executors, make inquisition in the demesne of the castle touching the names of those who are bound by reason of their tenure to repair the defects of the castle, and compel them, according to the quantity of their tenure and as was the ancient custom, to do the said repairs, by amercements and otherwise, as it shall seem best to them and the constable of the castle, or his lieutenant.

Whereas Ralph de Nevill, late lord of Raby, deceased, granted the manor of Houton, held in chief, and the manor of Pykenham Wade, not held of the king, co. Norfolk, to Robert de Nevill, his son, in tail male, and on the death of Robert without heir male of his body John de Nevill, now lord of Raby, son and heir of the said Ralph, entered into the said manors without due process or livery thereof in the king's court, and without the king's licence ; the king, for 100s. paid by the said John, has pardoned the said trespasses and granted that he may retain the premises. He has also granted licence for him to grant the said manor of Houton to Robert de Knolles and Constance his wife for life, and to the executors and assigns of them or of the survivor of them for half a year after their death.
