Emily Winter daughter of Naomi Carey of Cuckfield (baptismal record).

The identity of Emily's father is not known for certain, although it is likely his family name was Winter. It is worthwhile noting that Elizabeth Carey, sister of Emily's mother Naomi, married Edward Winter in 1844, that both Elizabeth and Edward witnessed Naomi's marriage to Charles Fiest in 1852, and that Edward Winter was present at Emily's marriage to Edgar Message in 1876.

At the time of the 1851 England Census Emily Carey (6 months) of Cuckfield, and mother Naomi Carey, age 25, born in Malling Sussex, unmarried, were with Naomi's aunt and uncle Jane Carey and William Carey in Chailey Sussex.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Emily W. C. Fiest, age 10, born in Cuckfield Sussex, scholar, was with her mother Naomi Fiest and her husband Charles Fiest in Green Lane, Ringmer Sussex.

In 1865 Emily Carey, single, daughter of Naomi Fiest, was named as a beneficiary in the Will of her maternal grandmother, Sophia Carey, widow, to be bequeathed £2.

At the time of the 1881 England Census Emily Winter Message, age 30, born in Cuckfield Sussex, and husband Edgar Message, age 24, born in Heathfield Sussex, farmer of 150 acres [employing] 2 men & 1 boy, were living in Plashett Farm, Little Horsted Sussex. With them were children: Edith Emily (3) of Brixton Surrey, Fredk Edgar (2) of Selmeston Sussex, and Clara Blanche (1) of Selmeston.

At the time of the 1891 England Census Emily Message, age 40, born in Cuckfield Sussex, and husband Edgar Message, age 34, born in Heathfield Sussex, dairy farmer, were living in Plashett House, Little Horsted Sussex. Present were children: Edith (13) of Brixton Surrey, scholar, Frederick (12) of Selmeston Sussex, scholar, Arthur (8) of Little Horsted, scholar, Kate (6) of Little Horsted, scholar, Laura (5) of Little Horsted, scholar, Mabel (4) of Thornton Heath Surrey, George (2) of Little Horsted, and Ralph (1 mo) of Little Horsted.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Emily Message, age 50, born in Cuckfield Sussex, and husband Edgar Message, age 44, born in Heathfield Sussex, farmer, were living in Great Harwoods Farm, East Grinstead Sussex. With them were children (born in Little Horsted): George (12), May (8), and Alice (5).

At the time of the 1911 England Census Emily Message, age 60, born in Cuckfield Sussex (mother of 13 children, 4 deceased), and husband of 34 years Edgar Message, age 55, born in Heathfield Sussex, farmer and sub-postmaster, were living in Post Office, Wiston, Sussex. With them were children (single): Edith (33), Mabel (24), George (22), farmer's son working on farm, and May (18).

In the 1939 Register Emily W Message (b. 29 Sep 1850), widowed, retired, was living at 87 St. Aubyns Road, Southwick Sussex. At the same address was [daughter] Edith E Message (b. 7 Oct 1877), single, shopkeeper, general dealer.
