The Alexeiad records that "Bolkan" left "his own nephews Uresis and Stephen Bolkan" as hostages with the emperor, dated from the context to [1094/95].

He succeeded his [uncle] as UROŠ I Veliki [Grand] Župan of Serbia. In 1125, he helped Djordje to oust Grubeša King of Duklja. After the Byzantine offensive in 1126, Serbia was forced to accept Byzantine suzerainty. ¹
