Handwriting Expert Dies

A MAN who taught himself to write yet became renowned for the beauty of his copperplate hand, Mr Fred Deverell, of 519 Seaside, died at St. Mary's Hospital last Saturday morning. He was 76.

Examples of Mr Deverell's writing have been seen outside the coach booking office of Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., on the notice boards announcing the tours for the past 29 years.

Visitors and residents alike would pause to look at his meticulous script as they passed the office, and many would go inside to find the author.

Mr Deverell, who was born at Camberlot Hall, Upper Dicker, served during the first world war with the Bedfordshire Regiment. He was a widower, and leaves three daughters: Mrs. A. Loat, of Twickenham, and Mrs E. Honeysett and Mrs G. H. Lade, of Seaside.

The funeral service took place at All Souls' Church on Wednesday afternoon.
