  Research Notes:

Elis III was son and heir of Elis II (who became a monk in Gloucester Abbey), by Berta (living 1167), sister of Walter de Clifford, of Clifford and Glasbury, and daughter of Richard fitz Ponce. In 1130 Elis II rendered account of 100 marks of silver for the relief of his father's lands, being son and heir of Elis I, by Ala, his wife. Before 1096 Elis I had succeeded his father Osbern Giffard, the Domesday tenant of Brimpsfield, Stoke, Rockhampton, Elston, Orcheston, etc. 1

The Historia sancti Petri Gloucestrić records the donation of "Cronham" made "tempore Hamelini abbatis" [abbot from 1148 to 1179] by "Helias Giffard filius Helić senioris et Alć uxoris eius". The Historia sancti Petri Gloucestrić records the donation of "ecclesiam Beatć Marić de Boytone, ecclesiam Sancti Georgii de Orchestone cum capella Sancti Andreć de Wyneterborne" made "tempore Hamelini abbatis" [abbot from 1148 to 1179] by "Helias Boy Gyffard", for the soul of "Bertć uxoris suus", later confirmed by "Walterus Giffard filius Helić…tempore Hamelini abbatis". "Elyas Giffardus" donated "ecclesiam Sanctć Marić de Boytona" to Gloucester St Peter, for the souls of "…uxoris meć Bertha", by undated charter. 2
