' Clergymen seemed to be able to get out of almost any difficulty. Some wrote letters to patrons begging for help because of impending financial ruin.... John Bristed, rector of St. Mary's and St. Michael's in Lewes, got help from his political friends. In 1733 one of Newcastle's electoral agents — William Hay — noted that the parson would not go outside of his house for fear that his creditors would accost him. On that occasion, Hay helped him out. In 1741 the Tory candidate evidently offered more, and Bristed abandoned Newcastle's interest.' 4

In 1744 John Bristed of Lewes, clerk, received £5 from the Will of William Wills of Lewes, shopkeeper.
