Hariott daughter of Thomas Wicks of Burwash, labourer, and Hannah (baptismal record)

--------------------------

At the time of the 1861 England Census Harriott Parsons, age 26, born in Burwash Sussex, widow, was living in Basinghall St., Tunbridge Wells Kent (at the same address as her brother Thomas Weeks and his wife Ann). With her were children (born in Burwash): James Parsons* (6), Henry* (4), Hannah* (2) and Horrice (4 months).

* James, Henry and Hannah were all born prior to Harriet's marriage to Horace Parsons who was apparently a bachelor at the time of their marriage. The eldest child, James, married as James Parsons in 1876 in Tunbridge Wells, at which time he gave his father's name as Horace Parsons. Harriet's second son, Henry Parsons, married in 1883 in Chobham Surrey, when he gave his father's name as Horace Parsons. Harriet refers to both James and Henry in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses as her sons. As such, they are shown in this tree as the children of both Horace and Harriet who, despite having been baptised under their mother's maiden-name (and likewise registered in the GROE birth index), took the name Parsons. In the GROE birth index, James Parsons (b.c. 1855) appears as James Thomas Weeks, birth registered in the 2nd quarter of 1854 in the Ticehurst district (of which Burwash is part); Henry Parsons (b.c. 1857) appears as Henry Weeks, birth registered the 2nd quarter of 1857 in the same district, and Hannah Parsons (b.c. 1859) was recorded as Hannah Caroline Weeks, her birth registered in the same district in the 1st quarter of 1859.

In 1870 daughter Hannah Caroline Parsons died aged 10 years.

At the time of the 1871 England Census Harriott Parsons, age 45 [sic], born in Burwash Sussex, widow, was living in Basinghall Lane, Tunbridge. With her were sons (born in Burwash): James (16), baker's assistant, Henry (13), baker's assistant, and Horace (10), scholar.

In 1875 son Horace Parsons died, aged 14 years.

At the time of the 1881 England Census Harriott Parsons, age 47, born in Burwash Sussex, widow, washer woman, was at 7 Basinghall infant school, Tonbridge Kent. With her was granddaughter Hannah Parsons (5) of Tunbridge Wells.

At the time of the 1891 England Census Harriet Sawyer, age 59, born in Heathfield Sussex, and husband Thos Sawyer, age 60, born in Burwash Sussex, farm labourer, were living in Back Road, Hawkhurst Kent.
