At the time of the 1881 England Census Ernest A Carey, age 9, born in Ringmer, scholar, was with his paternal grandparents Coldean, Falmer Sussex.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Ernest Cary, age 28, born in South Malling, single, petty officer 1st class, was in Gibraltar with the Royal Navy.

Ernest Carey, recorded as having been born on 25 Apr 1872* in South Malling Sussex, a labourer, with a bracelet tattooed on each wrist, served in the Royal Navy between 5 May 1887 and 5 Aug 1909. ³
