1 Friston Sussex Parish Registers, Baptisms, p. 1, no. 3. Both Mary (1814) and her younger brother George (1817) are shown in the Friston parish register as children of Edward Cary, labourer, and Mary; their younger sister, Harriot (1820), is recorded in the same register as daughter of Edward Cary, labourer, and Sophia. All three are named in the Will of Sophia Carey widow of Edward Carey, whom she calls her children. Moreover, Mary Heasman is shown in the Censuses as having been born in Friston Sussex about 1814. There is no record of the marriage of Edward Cary or Carey and Mary in Sussex within the requisite time period. As such the name Mary as the mother of Mary and George is undoubtedly a clerical error.
