Obituary

"ARLENE YANKOWSKI SOUTH BURLINGTON – Arlene Yankowski, 74, died on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at the Vermont Respite House following a courageous battle with cancer. Arlene was born on May 13, 1935, in Barre, the daughter of the late Albert O. and Ruth (Stott) Longchamp. She was a graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre, and Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in Hanover, N.H., where she obtained her degree as a Vermont Registered Nurse. On March 9, 1957, she married Peter Yankowski and together they raised their family in South Burlington. Arlene was a devoted and caring mother and grandmother who spent the early years of motherhood knitting beautiful sweaters and mittens, sewing ballet costumes, and putting her special touch on birthdays and holidays. Once her children entered grade school, she became employed at IBM where she continued her medical education and received certification as an Occupational Health Nurse. She remained at IBM until her retirement in 1995. She enjoyed traveling within the U.S. and Europe and had fond memories of her visits to Neuschwanstein, a fairytale castle in Germany, which has been affectionately renamed "Mom's castle." In more recent years, she enjoyed swimming at the "Y", weekly dinners out with a special group of ladies, attending her grandchildrens' school and sporting events, going for drives along the backroads of Vermont, kayaking, Scrabble, and challenging herself with crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Arlene is survived by her six children; Lisa Yankowski of South Burlington, Linda Sweet of San Diego, Calif., Karen Yankowski and her fiancé Michael Dunavin of Charlotte, Peter C. Yankowski and his wife Jennifer of Redding, Conn., David Yankowski of Cary, N.C., and Amy Yankowski of Hatfield, Mass. She will be missed by five beloved grandchildren: Michael Sweet and his wife Lorena, Elizabeth and Peter E. Yankowski, Tucker and Chase Weaver; and two great-grandchildren: Montago and Miles Sweet. She is also survived by a sister Joyce Longchamp, brother-in-law Stanley Yankowski, sisters-in-law Virginia Gurdak and Jill Longchamp, the extended Sweet, Weaver, Hiltz, Morris and Dunavin families, many cousins, nieces and nephews and a very dear friend and companion Walter E. Senn and his warm and welcoming family. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996, her parents and one brother Albert W. Longchamp..." 1
