Obituary

"DODGEVILLE - Betty J. (McCluskey) Evans, age 83, of Dodgeville, passed away peacefully at Upland Hills Health Nursing & Rehab Center on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief battle with chronic heart failure. She was born on March 11, 1930, the daughter of Edward and Helene (Heibel) McCluskey. She graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1948, and remained a lifelong Dodgeville resident. She was united in marriage to Edward D. "Toad" Evans on Feb. 17, 1949. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1992.

She worked at Minerva's Hair Salon, then as a bookkeeper for Borden Cheese Company before going to work for General Telephone as a customer representative for over 30 years, and finishing her working career at Lands' End after 18 years, retiring following her 80th birthday in June of 2010.

She was a devout catholic and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dodgeville. All of her kids attended St. Joseph School and she was very supportive of Catholic education. Her strong spirituality came from her grandmother and has been passed on to her children and grandchildren. She so much enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She traveled to many places with her children from the east coast to the west coast, to Hawaii and to Europe to see Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower, London to see Big Ben and London Bridge, and Ireland to kiss the Blarney Stone. Her three trips to Augusta for the Master's golf tournament were very memorable. She loved a cruise through the Panama Canal, where her husband, Toad, served in the U.S. Army, and especially a cruise with her friends to the Caribbean. She enjoyed watching and attending any sporting events, following the Dodgeville Dodgers, and cheering for the Packers, Badgers, Brewers, and The Fighting Irish. She occasionally liked to place a little wager in Las Vegas or a casino or winning at the Calcutta. She was very proud of her Irish heritage.

Betty is survived by her children, Ted (Patty) Evans of Mineral Point, children Kendall (Jennifer) Evans, daughter Samantha of Tolland, Conn., Kyle (Keri) Evans, daughter Madelyn of Manchester, Conn., Trina (Terry) Slack, sons Chase and Brooks of Wisconsin Dells, and Tricia (Mike) McVay, children Dominik, Chloe, and Makayla of Mineral Point; Tom (Mary) Evans of Madison, children Vince (Jessica Swan) of Madison and Nathan (Chelsi Mersberger) children Meryn Rosary, Nolan Donald, and Darius James of Stoughton; Peg Hitt of Sun Prairie and daughters Allison (Sean) Brennan and Molly (Joseph Ferris) Hitt both of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mary (Jim) O'Flahrity, sons J. Morgan and E. Donovan of Fitchburg.

Betty is further survived by her sisters, Marian (Bernard) Walsh and Carol Cody, both of Mineral Point; her in-laws, Norma McCluskey, Lois Arneson, Jayne Harrison, Ronnie (Joyce) Evans, all of Dodgeville, and Jim (Sharon) Evans of Barneveld; as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Don McCluskey; her sisters, Delores Hammond and Lois Jones; infant brother, Joseph; and her in-laws, Edward Cody, Thomas Jones, John Hammond, and Ralph and Joan Evans.

Mother was a compassionate person who couldn't do enough for others. She had a heart of gold and so enjoyed being a chauffeur for her friends and relatives, generously taking them wherever they needed to go. She loved doing anything for others, especially all of her grandchildren. She would travel all over the State of Wisconsin and the country to watch them participate. She was known as Grandma Betz to all who knew her. She had an infectious gift of kindness and fun spirit that she shared with all. Her family was the mainstay of her life. She greatly enjoyed having family home for celebrations and get togethers, especially Christmas Eve...." 3
