"NICHOLLS.

Kapunda residents were shocked when they learned that Mr. Fred G. Nicholls had died suddenly about 4 o'clock on Thursday afternoon of last week. He was assisting: Mr. H. Bensch in ploughing the allotment, planted with almond trees, opposite his home in Hare street, when he collapsed, the exertion apparently being too much for him. Mr. Nicholls had celebrated his 70th birthday on the previous day, when he spent a happy time. He was of a kind and generous disposition, ever ready to give a helping hand to those who needed it, and was held in very high esteem, not only in this district, but in many other parts of the State. He was born at Bordertown, and spent the early years of his life there, and later at Brighton. When about 12 years of age, he came to Hamilton with his parents, who took over the farm now occupied by Mr. Nicholls' son-in-law, Mr. G. J. Dewell. Later he farmed at Strathalbyn and Mintaro, and about 26 years ago he came to Kapunda, and was appointed travelling representative for H. V. McKay. Massey Harris Pty. Ltd., a position he held until a few months ago, when he retired owing to his age. His duties took him to many parts of the State, including Kangaroo Island, and when he retired recently the Company tendered him a farewell dinner, in addition to making him a handsome presentation. In his younger days Mr. Nicholls was a keen athlete, and was a prominent footballer and runner. He was also a successful amateur horseman, and rode at many country race meetings. Keenly interested in Free masonry, he was a Past Master of the Lodge of Light, and also of the. Kapunda Mark Lodge. He was also a prominent member of the local bowling club. Mr. Nicholls married Miss Mary Vivian Moyle, of Kapurida, who survives. There are also three daughters—Mrs. G. J. Dewell (Hamilton), Mrs. C. Jonsen (Payneham), and Mrs. C. Carrick (Lock)." 5
