"Mr. John Faull Palamountain, who was for 52 years resident in Mount Gambier and took a prominent part in public affairs, died at Henley Beach on Saturday, in his 81st year.

During his long residence in the town he took a very keen interest in public affairs, and was chief magistrate during the war years. In 1933 Mr. Palamountain left Mount Gambier with his wife and daughter Lenore, to reside at Kirkcaldy Road, Grange, where he spent his remaining years.

Born at Adelaide, in 1856, Mr. Palamountain was the only son of the late Mr, John Faull Pahrmountiiin, who came to South Australia by the ship "Sir Thomas Gresham" in 1854. He attended the Pulteney Street school under the late Mr. Moore and also Mr. Burgen's city school, being subsequently brought up to the store keeping business. He became manager of a business for his step-father at Collinsfield, which he relinquished in 1879 in order to open on his own account at Riverton, where he remained for six years. In 1884 Mr. Palamountain came to Mount Gambier and entered into partnereship with his wife's father, the late Mr. W. Temby, in conjunction with whom he established a store-keeping business, carrying on under the name of W. Temby & Co. At the end of 18 months Mr. Palamountain took over sole control of the business, and conducted it until about ten years ago.

ACTIVE PUBLIC LIFE

Mr. Palamountain took a leading part, in public affairs for many years and was connected with the majority of public bodies. He was elected Mayor unopposed for the 1913-14 term and was again similarly honored in 1914-15 Prior to his elevation to the office of chief magistrate of the town he served five years in the council, the first three as a councillor for North Ward, and the two years preceding his election as Mayor, as an alderman. He was again elected alderman in 1918.

'During his term as Mayor Mr. Palamountain presented his well known horse "Lord Kitchener," to the local committee in charge of War Funds. This horse was disposed of under the "bugler" system, and brought in hundreds of pounds. The presentation is commemorated by an enlarged photograph in the Town Hall.

He took a keen and practical interest in the Mount Gambier Institute. Elected as a trustee and treasurer in 1890, he occupied the position for about 43 years. He was also president of the trustees for a term.

He was President of the Mount Gambier Boys' Institute and was a vice-president and the treasurer of this institution. For many years he was president of the Mount Gambler School Board of Advice, and on that body being disbanded some years ago in view of the advent of school committees, he was elected chairman of the Mount Gambier committee, which position he filled until his departure to Adelaide. Another public appointment he filled for years was the Presidency of the Vansittart Park improvement Association. of which he was later patron: and as a member of the committee of the Mount Gambler A. and H. Society, president of the local Traders' Association, and a director of the Mount Gambier Cheese and Butter Company, he rendered good services. Mr. Palamountain was a justice of the peace for many years, his appointment having been gazetted in 1906. He was one of the "pillars" of the local Methodist Church, in connection with which for more than 40 years he waa superintendent of the Sunday School, and filled practically every office the Church had to offer. He was a trustee up to the time of his departure to Adelaide, and as an usher for a great many years always made visitors feel welcome.

Mr. Palamounlain was married in 1879 to Lenora Runnalls, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Temby of Mount Gambier. His wife and a family of three sons and four daughters survive. The members of his family arc Messrs. J. F. (Sydney), W. A. (Peake), H. R. (Adelaide), Mesdames S. Smith (Mile End), G. Bartholomew (Adelaide), F. White (Yacka), and Miss Lenore Palamountain (Grange)." 6
