"During the Civil War (1862-1865), he served in Company F, 96th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry, also Company A, 4th Pioneer Battalion, and in the 1st Regiment, US Veteran Volunteer Engineers. Joseph and Jane's first two children, Margaret and Joseph Jr were born in the Vinegar Hill/Galena area of Jo Daviess County, Illinois. In about 1866/67, the young family returned to Dodgeville. And around 1870, they re-settled in the area of Hancock, Houghton County, Michigan, where they remained. Joseph was a miner at the Franklin mine in Houghton County, Michigan."
