"Elmer served as a Private 1st Class, Company G, 125th Infantry, 32nd Division (Red Arrow Division), of the United States Army during WWI. He was killed near Les Jomblets woods, by a sniper.

His unit was referred to as "Les Terribles" by the French, for its ability to break through every German line it encountered. His unit is also distinguished as being the first allied unit to cross into German territory during WWI. "
